Lester Horton Technique The Warm Up

August 8, 2009 by Beauty Tips · Leave a Comment

Lester Horton Technique The Warm Up

Lester Horton Technique: The Warm-Up is a unique program designed to prepare dancers for rehearsal and performance. The technique’s creator, Lester Horton, was determined to develop a warm-up that did not limit how the body could move, and that was anatomically corrective. As a result, his method has enormous variety, range and complexity. Such noted dancers and choreographers as Alvin Ailey, Bella Lewitzky and Joyce Trisler began their dance training with Horton and used the techniques with their own students. Horton protégée Marjorie B. Perces and Ana Marie Forsythe lead a group of young professional dancers and the viewer through leg swings, metatarsal presses and fortifications in this exclusive Kultur presentation, which preserves this important achievement in dance training for generation to come. For the professional dancer who needs to build strength, agility and flexibility, this DVD provides important injury-preventing techniques. It’s also an excellent way for the non-dancer or athlete to do a non-aerobic workout that helps develop grace and relieves muscle stress.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Its ok
After a few years in modern dance class, this material seems very old hat.

Buy it if you’ve never danced and want to maintain range of motion as you age, or if the Horton technique is a big part of your studio work, but for the average (active) person, its stuff you already know.

3 Stars Beautiful moves, but not enough instruction
I am not a dancer, but I thought who better to take tips from about warming up & stretching then people who put their body through hours of intense work daily?

Watching the dancers graceful movements was beautiful to see how the body moves when posture is correct.

The DVD runs like a copy of an old VHS from the 80s with everyone including the guys in bright neon, tight spandex. Exactly what you see on the picture of the DVD. The chapter menu is good.

There are diff exercises such as flat back stretching, primitive squat descent, lateral torso stretches & release torso swings, leg swings, deep lunges, fortifications (hamstring & calf stretches, balancing on toes, plies, hip propulsion), elementary balance (ballet style), 5/4 swings (lateral torso swing & turn w/leg in split in the air), dimensional tonus (using other moves in slower more toning way), & the first 5 exercises. (exactly what you see on the picture.) I did feel more stretched out, some exercise work as good or better then yoga or look similar to it.

The cons is first they show the dancers doing it with general stiff female voice over, not instructions how they do it so you have to the look at the screen. After is the same woman voice over with pictures of what they did reminding you some posture cues, etc., though not enough to be of that much help.

At the end they show the first 5 exercises only one after the other without stopping.

I would only recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have any joint limitations or muscle/bone issues, can do squats several times easily, can swing their leg fwd to their chest & backwards & up & exercises regularly.

I took off two stars for the lack of instruction & stiff presentation & I personally love the movement itself, I don’t like how each move is executed with a slow, quick, slow, quick speed. It’s great for increasing precision & control, but not good for increasing fluidity & being in the moment in your body other then a logical way.

5 Stars Great! And easy to follow.
I got this DVD to get better in my modern dance class. If your school does Horton exercises and you want to see how they are done on your own time, this is great. It is a professional DVD presentation which first shows you a given exercise using several dancers at different angles to the camera, and then breaks the exercise down into the important things to note and keep in mind. It has good flow, so you can do the exercises as you watch them, which I do.

I am glad I got it.

Fatal Beauty

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars ONE OF MY FAVORITE WHOOPI MOVIE, AMONGST OTHERS
I am yet to find any of her movies that is boring to me. This was good and simple. Not dragging for hours or any of that stuff. Rent or buy it

3 Stars Not so fatal
Whoopi has been in plenty of good films and a very little bad films. Fatal Beauty is not a bad film but it’s not the best Whoopi can give you. I loved Jumpin Jack Flash but this movie doesnt have the appeal that Jumpin Jack Flash did. Fatal Beauty is still worth a look despite its flaws.

Plot: Fatal Beauty is in reference to a drug that kills its users within a few hours of its use. Whoopi Goldberg plays Rita Rizzoli, a cop who constantly goes undercover to find crooks and bust them. She stumbles unto the lethal drug called “Fatal Beauty” one night during a bust and is bent on finding out who is supplying it. She has to put up with a corrupted millionaire who she believes is in on the whole operation and his bodyguard Mike Marshak(Sam Elliot) who is attracted to her.

Opinion: Fatal Beauty has its share of positives as well as negatives.

Positives: Its funny(even though the laughs are sometimes sporadic), there are serious moments in the movie that sometimes work(like Rita revealing why she does what she does), the action scenes are decent, and the movie as a whole is a decent watch. Negatives: The laughs are sporadic, there is no chemistry between Whoopi’s character and Sam Elliot’s character(hell, there is more chemistry between Boris and Natasha of Rocky and Bullwinkle than these two), Sometimes there are more unintentional laughs then genuine laughs, sometimes the movie feels like a Beverly Hills Cop knockoff(Rita gets so deep into a case that it costs her her job just like Axel Foley). Other than that this movie is still worth watching. Its far from the best movie that Whoopi has been in but its also far from the worst(Theodore Rex and Burglar). Its still worth being in your Whoopi Goldberg collection.

5 Stars Excellent
Good story line - get the bad guy - at all costs. Great personal story running in the background. Love Whoopi - Love Sam Elliot

5 Stars One of My Favorite Action Movies
As a woman of color, I fiended for movies where the female protagonist looked like me. I’d started watching Whoopi with Jumping Jack Flash and The Color Purple. I’d forgot how not since the Blackploitation movie days, had I seen an African descended woman holding her own as an action heroine. It’s unfortunate that this movie didn’t get the treatment Jumping Jack Flash did when released on DVD. I’d love a director’s cut with the restored Whoopi and Sam Elliott in bed scene. Brad Dourif and Rueben Blades were also quite memorable in their respective roles. I always grinned at the “Jimmy on my mind,” refrigerator interrogation. Now that’s what I call sass!

5 Stars Excellent service and fast shipping
The movie was packaged well and I received it in a timely fasion. It was everything that was described in the ad.

Introduction to Polynesian Dance With Tumata

First hand experience of the enchanting beauty and charm of ancient Tahitian and Polynesian dances and cultural presentations are unforgettable. The pulsing drums, the blur of the hip shaking, intoxicating tropical flower scents, and the unmistakable energetic performance that is Polynesian dance are brought together here. Dance is one of Tumata’s foremost passions, which she teaches in addition to being one of the leaders of Tahiti’s most creative and popular dance troupe, Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti. In this program, Tumata goes through three basic steps of Tahitian dancing, the Ori Tahiti, the otea and the aparima.

4 Stars Introduction to Polynesian Dance
I have been dancing Tahitian and Hula all my life. This is a great video to learn and review Tahititan dance moves and simple routines. It is a great work out video too. The movements are authentic and easy to follow. I highly recommend this video for those who are wanting to learn Tahitian dance or they may want to just use it as part of an exercise program. The settings are in Tahiti. It would be great to have links to other videos by this same person.

5 Stars Tamure
This DVD is about as close as you will get to the authentic way to dance Tahitian without being in Tahiti. This woman is a skilled instructor that knows the REAL way to dance Tahitian. She has been apart of one of the most creative groups in Tahiti, so she knows exactly what she is talking about. This is definitely a very informative video teaching the essence of basic Tahitian motions and movements. I highly recommend this video if you would like to learn the basics of Tahitian don’t buy that other video Tahitian cardio workout. It is not a realistic video it’s not even a Tahitian dance video. A wise person once told me if you want learn Tahitian dance learn it from a Tahitian.

3 Stars tahitian dance
This DVD provides a good collection of basic tahitian dance moves as well as a very skilled ami within an ami move at the end. Worth checking out.

5 Stars Ia Orana
For those wanting to learn the basics of Tahitian dancing, this is a great purchase. I have been a fan of Tumata Robinson and her new group Tahiti Ora as well as Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti for a several years now and I am glad that she made a video that broke down the basics. Excellent work! Meeting her and Moena in person at the recent Tahite Fete was just as fantastic as this video and its prompt delivery.

5 Stars Excellent DVD
This DVD teaches all of the basic steps and hand movements needed for Polynesian dance. It is easy to follow and explains in detail how to move your hands and feet properly - clear and simple. Learning the hand movements will be most helpful in the translation of other dances you might view and will help you to create a proper dance to almost any song. It is 100% devoted to learning Polynesian dance - no workout. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone who is unable to find dance classes locally, as you will be able to use this DVD at home with much success.
